Road trip trough Grisons

Road trip trough Grisons
December 5, 2021 by Yanick Küchler

The freedom to cruise the country roads in a camper, fresh air blowing through the open window and you can sleep wherever you want. A dream, isn’t it?

This fall I explored the beautiful canton of Grisons in a lovely campervan from Camper Imperium. I was on the road with my good friends Balin and Jan. We spent several days on the road, hiked through beautiful autumn landscapes and took a lot of great photos.

Here is the story about our fall road trip trough Grisons

Our journey began in Büren (NW), the homebase of Vero and Alex, who run the Camper Imperium together. With good mood enthusiasm for the next few days we made our way to Surses (GR). Above the village of Surses we found our sleeping place for the night. The roof tent set up, the fairy lights turned on and the chairs put out, we started cooking our delicious dinner.

After a restful night, we set off in the morning for Alp Flix. Strengthened with energy from a tasty breakfast, we started the 45 minute walk to the Lais Blos. The path leads comfortably from the public parking lot along the road, past the yurt village to the lake. We enjoyed the beautiful weather at the lake and tanked some sun before the clouds rolled in.

Vanlife Spot in Pontresina – Grisons

We continued our road trip and drove through the beautiful village of Bivio, over the Julierpass to Pontresina. After a short lunch break in St. Moritz it started to rain heavily. Which is why we decided against the planned hiking. Instead we enjoyed a sociable evening with games and delicious fajitas at the campsite in Pontresina.

The weather did not really treat us well. Because the next morning it was still raining in full streams. Our super great campsite at the water would certainly have looked fantastic in the nicest weather. But well – the weather was simply as it was – there was nothing we could do about it now. So we continued our road trip and drove from Pontresina over the Bernina Pass to Poschiavo.

To Lago di Saoseo by camper

After a little grocery shopping at the local supermarket, we parked the van at a public parking lot nearby and prepared our lunch. Because of the heavy rain, none of us were really motivated to go out and tackle the planned hike to Lago di Saoseo. So we spent almost the whole afternoon in the van. We worked a bit, read books and chilled on our smartphones. But so after more than three hours together in the camper, the ceiling fell on our heads a bit. We just had to get out into the fresh air and decided to go hiking despite the pouring rain.

From the parking lot we hiked about two hours through mystical forests, past small ponds to Lago di Saoseo. The hike through the forest was on one side very beautiful and idyllic, but on the other, we just wanted to turn around and go back to the warm camper. Because at this point we were completely soaked down to the skin. Even though each of us was soaking wet, cold and we had actually imagined the photos at the lake a bit sunnier, it was a very special atmosphere at the lake.

There was total silence. Only the raindrops softly pattered on the surface of the water and the wind howled around the larches.

Completely soaked and shivering, we arrived a few hours later at our campsite in Poschiavo. We were infinitely glad that the camper had a good auxiliary heating installed. With the heater fully turned up, we warmed ourselves up again and hung our soaked clothes in front of the heater. Even if it was warm in the camper, we had imagined this road trip through the autumnal Grisons a bit sunnier.

As our stomachs slowly started to grumble we started to cook. Once again, we had an excellent dinner. Throughout this whole road trip I have the feeling that we have eaten well and balanced with very little effort.

The Grisons Road Trip is slowly coming to an end

We decided to sleep in the next morning because it was still raining like crazy. This was also a good reason to prepare a rich breakfast and to approach the morning a bit slower. Shortly before noon we started the more than four-hour journey home to the Camper Imperium in Büren. On the Bernina Pass we enjoyed the beautiful view of Lago Bianco again before we continued towards Samedan.

In the charming village of La Punt Chamues-ch we turned to the left up the pass road to the Albulapass, in my eyes one of the most beautiful alpine passes in Switzerland. The vegetation on the Albulapass is very reminiscent of Iceland. Especially in rainy weather the landscape is simply amazing.

Road Trip Stop at Lai da Palpuogna

From the top of the pass we went down to the Lai da Palpuogna, also called Lake Palpuogna. At this idyllic mountain lake we recharged our inner batteries for the long journey home and stretched our legs a bit. The impressive thing is that the Palpuogna lake is 1918 meters above sea level, because when we hiked around the lake it never seemed so high.

Breathing in the fresh mountain air of Grisons one last time and admiring the beautiful landscape, we returned to Büren in the canton of Nidwalden to return the van to Vero and Alex.

Looking back, despite the rainy and cloudy weather, we had a great road trip in the autumnal Grisons with our camper.

Thanks to Vero and Alex from Camper Imperium for providing us with their Campervan.
