Abgschütz Bivouac – Älggi-Alp

Abgschütz Bivouac – Älggi-Alp
July 22, 2020 by Yanick Küchler

The Abgschütz Bivouac is an emergency hut in the Swiss-Alps. It’s located between Melchsee-Frutt and Älggi-Alp.

In the heart of Switzerland lies the beautiful Älggi-Alp. Älggi is the geographical centre of Switzerland. On the cosy alp you will also find a good restaurant and lots of cows.

Just above the Älggi-Alp is the Abgschütz. This is mainly known as the transition from Melchsee-Frutt to Älggi and is not necessarily considered a mountain in its own right. There is an emergency hut on the Abgschütz, which is also called the Abgschütz bivouac.

In the bivouac there are tables, benches and a box of food for emergencies.

From the Abgschütz you have a fantastic view of the Obwald mountains.

You can perfectly see over into the Melchsee-Frutt and in the background you can even see the Titlis and the Susten glacier.

Right in front of the entrance of the hut you have a great opportunity to sit down, from which you have a great view to the Älggi and the Seefeldsee.

To the west you also see the blue Lake Brienz and the surrounding Bernese Alps. In good conditions you can also get a view of Lake Thun.

There are two ways to get to the Abschütz bivouac.
The trail over the Älggi, or the trail over the Melchseefrutt.

Älggi-Alp

The hiking trail starts at the car park of the Älggialp and follows the hiking trail to the Seefeldsee. From there the trail climbs up the lake on the right. The hiking trail runs under the Seefeldstock until you reach the top of the ridge. From this point you can look down again to the Seefeldsee or over to the Gibel in Lungern.

Afterwards the path is a bit steeper with the help of wire ropes up to the Abgschütz, where you can enjoy the beautiful view from the hut. Solidly-fixed chains offer help and reassurance to the hands, and metal rungs are there for the feet, but the rock is wet and slippery in places. Therefore, caution is required…
